Yikes! My Car is Really Leaking

Yikes! My Car is Really Leaking

So here’s the deal, my husband has not been very pleased with me lately. He keeps asking me to make an appointment at A-1 Nashville Transmission to bring my car in because he is constantly putting sand and kitty litter down on our driveway to cover up whatever it is that is leaking from my car.

Well I did it; I finally brought my my car into A1 Nashville Transmission…and I’m glad I did because I learned a lot. It turns out that cars take many different fluids to run their various systems (I was thinking oil and windshield wiper fluids were the only ones). Anyway, the car technician at A-1 Nashville Transmission went on to explain to me that when the various fluids are not properly filled to the manufacturer’s specifications, your vehicle is at risk for being damaged and the repairs could be costly.

So what’s the best thing to do? Don’t do what I did…don’t wait. Take your car in to have a mechanic check it out the moment you discover a leak. Even better yet, keep up with your car’s recommended maintenance and a leak may not develop in the first place. The professionals at A-1 Nashville Transmission told me that chances are, if you have a leak it is one of these 5 more common ones:

  1. Oil Leak
  2. Transmission Fluid Leak
  3. Differential Fluid Leak
  4. Brake Fluid Leak
  5. Coolant Leak

Broken down, here is what each one means for your car…

Oil Leak

Like the problem my car was having, an oil leak is easy to identify because of the drip spots (usually black or brown) it will leave where you park. That said, this is not just a quick fix. First it must be determined where the leak is coming from as there are many places for oil to escape from your car’s engine. Usually one of the engine’s many seals or gaskets is where the leak is occurring.

Transmission Fluid Leak

If you notice a reddish colored leak coming from under the passenger side of your car (usually that is where it is located) then you may have a transmission leak. One of the signs your car is low on transmission fluid from having a leak is that it will either have problems shifting or will not shift at all any longer.

Differential Fluid Leak

This leak resembles a transmission leak so the best way to determine if it is or not is to notice where the leak is coming from. As said before, a transmission leak will be under the passenger cabin but a differential fluid leak will most likely be coming from the rear of the vehicle.

Brake Fluid Leak

If you notice a brown drip in your garage that feels slick when you touch it, either take your car to a mechanic ASAP or call A-1 Nashville Transmission and have them tow your car into their shop (Yes, they offer that service). A brown, slick leak is probably your brake fluid which can be extremely dangerous,as your car may either be slow to respond to stopping or will not stop at all. For safety reasons, this is not a leak you want to put off getting fixed.

Coolant Leak

As far as ignoring any leaks your car may have, you definitely do not want to ignore this one, as doing so will result in extremely expensive engine damage. Coolant fluid feels slimy and although it is usually bright green in color, it can also be pink or yellow. When your coolant fluid is low it causes your engine to overheat which is when costly damage begins to occur.

While I am no mechanic, after talking to the professionals at A-1 Nashville Transmission, I now know the importance of having my car checked out right away when a leak is present (that and it will get my hubby off my back as he pours more cat litter down on our driveway). The experts at A-1 Nashville Transmission were honest, explained everything to me in layman’s terms, and got my leak fixed for a great price.

Is Replacing a Filter Really That Important?

Is Replacing a Filter Really That Important?

Remember that popular 80’s board game Trivial Pursuit? Everyone had that one topic they rocked at and one topic they were pretty much clueless at (at least I did). Well today’s topic is cars and the question is this (but you don’t get a little colored pie piece if you answer correctly):

  1. How much clean air does a car need to burn its fuel?
  2. 216,000 gallons of air is what the average sedan needs for each tank of gasoline.

Where in the world does all this air go? Alright, this is getting a little too hard for a friendly game of Trivial Pursuit so A-1 Nashville Transmission in, you guessed it, Nashville Tennessee, will take over from here. Transmission repair specialists for over 16 years, A-1 Nashville Transmission explains that the air passes through the filter which catches the dust and dirt. You know how your home furnace needs its filter changed every month to keep dust, allergens, etc out of your home? Well it is equally important to replace your car’s filter also (every 30,000-45,000 miles depending on your car’s recommendation).

Okay, I will admit it. I am not as diligent as I should be at replacing my home furnace’s filter so when I finally do, my first response is, “Oh, yikes. That’s pretty black. Maybe I shouldn’t have waited so long.” Well you should have the same mentality toward your car’s filter also. That said, when your car filter isn’t changed, the result is disastrous because when the filter is full of dirt it does not work any longer which means that all the dirt and dust it should be catching starts accumulating and collecting on your car’s delicate airflow sensors.

And back to Trivial Pursuit…Q. What is a mass airflow sensor? (Just kidding. No more game playing; we’ll give you the answer.) The airflow sensor measures how much air gets to your engine. When not working properly due to the sensor reading being off (due to you not changing your filter) your car’s engine does not get the correct amount of air it should, thus causing it to not run as efficiently as it should since it is not getting the proper amount of fuel.

If you don’t mind paying a couple hundred dollars to replace your mass airflow sensor, go ahead and call A-1 Nashville Transmission for an appointment. But wouldn’t you rather call A-1 Nashville Transmission to have them replace your air filter for only about $15-$25 depending on your car’s make? I think we both know the answer. To put it into perspective, if you keep up with your 6 month dental cleaning visits (maintenance) then it will save you hundreds compared to not going to the dentist regularly and then finding out you need a lot of dental work done ($$$) to fix the years of neglect. By comparison, a damaged sensor will cost a ton more than if you would have kept up on your car’s regular maintenance and replaced the filter. Actually, you can purchase about two cases of air filters for the same price as one sensor.

So next time your car is in the shop and the gentleman working on it suggests replacing a filter that looks rather dirty, don’t think he’s just trying to get more money out of you; he’s trying to save you money in the long run. Remember, your car needs a new filter to run properly. There is a reason A-1 Nashville Transmission has been serving the Nashville area for over 16 years…because they are honest and know cars…they know your car.

They also know that when your filter is dirty, it is not doing its job of catching the dirt in the air. When this happens, the dirt passes on through to your engine and is eventually burned along with your fuel causing harmful emissions in the air. That said, we want to keep the air quality in Music City clean for our lungs, right? Yeah, we thought so.

So call A-1 Nashville Transmission for an appointment today and have your filter checked. For more information about A-1 Nashville Transmission, please visit www.a1nashvilletransmisssion.com.

Having Trouble With Your Car’s Transmission?

Having Trouble With Your Car’s Transmission?

“It’s the transmission.” Now there’s a sentence nobody wants to hear because it isn’t exactly the cheapest thing to fix on your car. But here is where the problem lies; many transmission repair places realize that people know transmissions are a major expense to fix so they take advantage of them and charge for other unnecessary repairs also.

Locally owned and operated A-1 Nashville Transmission in Nashville, Tennessee, however, is not like other repair shops. Since 2000, they have provided their customers with quick diagnoses and economical repairs that don’t hurt your pocketbook when compared to the price of bringing your car to another transmission repair shop. It is because of their honesty, knowledge and customer service that A-1 Nashville Transmission has been around for so long.

When customers leave A-1 Nashville Transmission, they use words like these to describe their experience:

  • Trustworthy
  • Knowledgeable
  • Reliable
  • Impeccable Work
  • Attentive

Highly rated, one satisfied customer said, “They may not be a big chain, but they have better service based on my experience with them.”

Upon bringing your vehicle in to be repaired, one of A-1 Nashville Transmission’s trained technicians will ask you if you have noticed any leaks. They will also want to know how you think your car is running, like “not smoothly” for example. After that the transmission specialist will check a few things on his own to help diagnose the problem:

  • Is the transmission fluid at the correct level according to the car’s manufacturer specifications? If it is low, is it leaking?
  • Is the filter clean or clogged up? Does it need to be replaced?
  • Are all the gears working/shifting properly?

Unlike many car repairs that the average car do-it-yourselfer can manage, transmissions require a trip to a specialist. But even so, when you take your car into the shop and the technician explains his diagnoses to you, it is a good idea to be knowledgeable enough to comprehend what he is saying. If more people understood, perhaps less people would get ripped off by the other places.

That said, if you want to have your repair done by a trustworthy, locally owned business that has made transmission repairs its specialty for numerous years, call A-1 Nashville Transmission. They will get you back on the road quickly and economically. And remember, although transmissions need to be completely rebuilt at times, the best thing you can do for your car to hopefully avoid this costly repair, is keep up with regular maintenance like filter changing, etc.

Please call or visit our website today at www.a1nashvilletransmission.com to set up an appointment. Can’t get your car here? We even offer towing service.

Drivetrains, Torques and Synchronizers…Is This a Foreign Language?

Drivetrains, Torques and Synchronizers…Is This a Foreign Language?

Are you a person who loves learning new things? I am one of those people who constantly loves to learn about new subjects…it keeps my brain active. That said, while driving around the other day and I noticed my clutch started shifting slower. Thinking it may be the transmission, I started googling.

Drivetrain, torque and synchronizer were mentioned everywhere. I’m a smart person, but this was a little beyond my reach of knowledge, so I asked some friends of mine and they all pretty much said the same thing, “Transmissions ARE One of the Most Difficult Parts to Understand on a Car…Not to Mention Work On.”

Okay, so I need to forget about learning something new in this particular case and find a professional who knows transmissions. Knowing that word of mouth is best, I didn’t search for transmission places on Google, I just started asking around. Turns out, right here in my hometown of Nashville, Tennessee is A-1 Nashville Transmission.

A-1 Nashville Transmission has been a locally owned and operated business since 2000. That’s 15 years in the transmission industry. May I be so bold as to say no matter what business you are in, you will not be around that long unless you are reputable, honest, know your niche and are dependable?

Actually, I looked up a few comments from customers (who wouldn’t, right). Here is what I found…

  • “I will be recommending A-1 Nashville Transmission to everyone.”
  • “Their honest estimate spoke volumes. I knew they weren’t charging me for things that didn’t need to be fixed.”
  • “Everyone I encountered was honest, professional and friendly…and I am good at reading people.”
  • “I called around before going to A-1 and they were by far the cheapest. I’ll recommend them to everyone from now on.”

Okay, this quotation section could seriously go on for a few pages.; that’s how good they are!

Here’s the deal…I know transmissions are an intricate, delicate creature, one I won’t ever conquer. That said, I am going to call the A-1 Nashville Transmission specialists in Nashville, TN to look at my car. They have been around for over 15 years and they definitely know transmissions.
